Therapy is owned and operated by Sophia Waters who is a physical therapist and
lives in Oconee County.
Sophia R. Waters, MS,
Sophia grew up in Athens, Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology
from Furman University in 1992 and a Master's of Science in
Physical Therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1994. Sophia has worked in the Athens area in
outpatient orthopedics and spine therapy since 1995. Sophia opened Oconee Physical Therapy and
Sports Rehabilitation in 2004 with Kurt Gelfand. The business was initially operated on Hog
Mountain Road. In 2017, the practice was
moved to its present location on Macon Highway.
Sophia enjoys working with the wide variety of patients we treat at
Oconee Physical Therapy. It is important
to her that all patients feel as though they are part of the Oconee Physical
Sophia lives in Oconee County with her
husband, David and their 2 children, Catharine and Thomas. Her children are students in Oconee county schools
and play softball, football, and lacrosse.
Justin Stewart, PT,
Justin graduated from Georgia Southern
University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Minor in
Sports Medicine. He then went to Elon University and graduated in 2009
with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. He has worked in and around the
Athens area in outpatient, orthopedic clinics and is happy to call Oconee
Physical Therapy home. He has specialized training in spinal rehabilitation
utilizing Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment techniques from the McKinzie
Institute, as well as other validated approaches from Maitland and Mulligan, to
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation techniques. He values manual
therapy, a hands on approach, and detailed education to empower patients on the
road to recovery.
He lives locally in Watkinsville and is
married to another physical therapist. Together they have 2 kids and enjoy
staying physically active and involved in their local church.
Leigh Adams, PT, ATC
Leigh Adams earned her
undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in Exercise and Sport
Science in 1998. She attended the Medical College of Georgia and earned
her Masters in Physical Therapy in 2001. She attained her Athletic
Training Certification in 2002. Leigh has been treating patients in the
outpatient setting since 2002. She works with a wide variety of age
groups and specializes in orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries.
interests include lake activities, tennis, reading, and spending time with her
husband and two daughters.
Matthew Murray, PTA, ATC
Matt earned his Physical Therapist Assistant degree
from Athens Technical College in 1999.
He also earned his Bachelor’s of Health Education to become a Certified
Athletic Trainer in 2007 from Georgia College and State University. Matt has worked in nursing homes, hospitals,
home health, cardiac rehab, aquatics and in outpatient rehabilitation
centers. He has been a valued team
member of Oconee Physical Therapy for the past 8 years. As an athletic trainer, he has worked in a
high school, college, and semi-professional setting and is currently the
athletic trainer for Oconee County Middle School football.
Matt and his wife, Mary Ann, have 3 children. He enjoys spending time with his family,
playing basketball and softball, camping, hiking, Georgia Bulldog football, and
pretty much anything else outdoors.
Lauren Harrison, PTA
Lauren Harrison earned her Associate of Applied
Science Degree for Physical Therapist Assistant from Athens Technical College
in 2009. She has been employed by Oconee
Physical Therapy since graduation, gaining experience in outpatient
Lauren’s hobbies include spending time with her
daughter, husband, and family. She
enjoys attending concerts and Georgia football games, as well as taking trips
to the mountains.
Chris Beshara, PTA
Chris Beshara joined Oconee Physical Therapy in late 2015. She has been practicing as a Physical
Therapist Assistant for 27 years. She
has a variety of work experience that includes the hospital setting, home
health, breast cancer, aquatics, as well as many years in the outpatient
setting. Chris is a dedicated clinician
who enjoys guiding patients with exercises and teaching strategies to help them
turn to the activities they love.
Chris’ personal interests include hiking, cooking,
live music, travel, as well as spending time with family and friends.
